Weekend Auto-Fun :: 4-13-2008

quote: "I pressed my lips against his ear and whispered again, It's not your fault. Perhaps this was really the only thing I had ever wanted to say to anyone, and be told." (Miranda July, "The Shared Patio")

links:
1) Jackie Warner of Bravo's "Workout" is the new Shane: "For Housewives, She's the Hot Ticket." Highlights of this piece include zingers like: "Show me a straight guy that doesn't love to watch women kiss," "What in Sappho's name is going on?" "She's got fierce abs, a sexy voice and the most amazing lip gloss I have ever seen." (@nytimes)
2) The best part about this article is that it was suggested to me by Gmail adsense, and implores that "the very last thing an author should be doing is starting a blog": "Is Writer's Blog Causing Writer's Block?" (@the age.com.au)
3) Why are Sylvia Plath and Elizabeth Bishop the only women in Guardian's recent series of poetry booklets? Eva Salzman tries to answer: "How to Trivialize Women's Poetry" (@the guardian UK)
4) "An entire generation has been left incapable of understanding or enjoying the arts because of decades of neglect by Britan's Schools." Srsly they should come to America, it's even worse here. (@telegraph uk)
5) Newsflash! "Watching endless reruns of Friends and CSI might be compromising your happiness.":"Too much TV can leave you lonely." (@the columbus dispatch)
6) 50 Greatest Comedy Sketches of All Time includes videos and respective commentary on The State, Mr. Show, SNL, Upright Citizens Brigade, Kids in the Hall (omg, chicken lady, I nearly forgot about you), Monty Python, French & Saunders, SCTV, The Carol Burnett Show, Chapelle's Show, In Living Color, etc. Bass-o-Matic! Rick James! I didn't expect the Spanish Inquisition! Too much TV can leave you lonely! LOL! Wheee! (@nerve & IFC)
7) Srsly though I still love Trebuchet the mostest: "On Choosing Type" (@ilovetypography.com)
8) Michael Chabon's rejected screenplay for Spiderman 2 is available, briefly, on McSweeny's. (thanks for this tip, adam!)
9) Paper Magazine's Most Beautiful People of 2008. Appropriately etheral shafts of light, requisite Gossip Girl actress, harp player, ethnic hipster DJs, young people w/famous and/or rich and/or hippie parents, indie filmmakers, performance artists, owners of a "clothing botique that presents vintage street fashion as objects d'art," etc.
10) Parents love text messaging almost as much as I do: "Running L8 But CU Soon, Luv Mom" My favorite part is the photo-slideshow of Mom texting. (@washington post.)

I want to remember my French well enough to shout out:

On ne sait jamais!

And yes, the essential is invisible to the eyes. So let's all go blind together.

My mama, also, wishes that I accomplish other papers. Pages. Books.

I thought that I was (more than less) endorsing Shaughnessy — and not massage.

Have you gotten your hands on Human Dark With Sugar yet?

On to current events:

(1) Jackie makes me [s]we[a]t, but more so when the hair's shorter. Also, she's really not the new Shane but rather the blonde Shane.

(2) Should I stop staring? Now? Or now?

(3) Your writer's blog is causing a linkage snag. Thorny. Trivializing the Guardian? Tsk.

(4) Witnessing cultural incapacitation and ignorance gives me hot flashes. Maybe this's your issue? Or have you been sneaking Work Out episodes on YouTube?

(5) Too much Netflix, iTunes TV and random YouTube subscriptions are a classier way to go for lonely.

(6) I'm oscillating between The Ginger Refuge and Cheeseburger.

(7) I love people who love I love typography. Biased. Trebuchet rocks the internets, Helvetica the extranets.

(8) Cool design. Like a nice layered outfit. Love layers which's why the approach of Summer sucks.

(9) Sounds like "no" in German.

(10) Rhymes with "and here we are again."

You know, I would've posted some protest about Jackie not being the new Shane until I realized they pretty much have the same awful haircut in that picture.

"juno" Nice one, there, with the sacred touch link. There's a Tantric Healer in San Francisco who's phone line is probs BLOWIN' UP right now from all the referrals/Lozo. Anyhow, speaking of getting my hands on things (see what I did there?) -- no. No Human Dark With Sugar, though I've been looking for her at bookstores for months (to no avail -- just like the Guardian, Barnes & Noble won't stock any women poets besides Sylvia Plath and Elizabeth Bishop. (and sexton, dickinson, occasionally mary oliver). I just looked on amazon, 2-5 weeks? I need instant gratification. Who knows who I'll be in 2-5 weeks. And here we are again.

Speaking of gratification: (1) I prefer Jackie's [sweaty] shorter hair too. Also, not coincidentally, Shane's. Careful with the [b]rackets, you could scare the children. (5) As long as the internet's involved, clearly I'll easily amend "classy" to "lonely." (6)I had to quit at the SNL clip where someone actually filmed the television set. too much artificial light makes the baby go blind. (7) I cheated, it was A;ex's shared link.

katyn: I have the same haircut as your user icon, who I believe is a model now. I don't know what happened to jackie's hair either. Maybe it's so the thwarted women of America can have something to put on their "top 10 reasons it wouldn't have worked anyhow" lists when rejected by their popular paramours.

"Kids in the Hall (omg, chicken lady, I nearly forgot about you)"

Seeing the entire original cast live in a month, how pumped am I?!

...pretty pumped.

I did not even know such a thing was happening!

Good look on the links, you. Always gives me something to break up the ridiculous amount of time I spend scanning sites about the orange roundie for work.

(NOTE: I went with "you" in the first sentence only after I discovering I couldn't figure out how to abbreviate "usual" in writing to properly convey the sound "yooje," in "as per us(ual)" which, of course, I'm now attempting to convey, and failing. However, now that I've gone with "yooje" (twice, fuck) I guess that's it.

NOTE ON THE NOTE: Remarkably, this section of the comment was brought to you by the mindstate "Sober," though it was funded by the Corporation for Maybe I Should Have Gotten More Sleep This Weekend In Beds Instead of Buses and Couches.)

Also, I needed to repop my comment cherry, so uh ... *POP*

The Brooklyn Boy said...

PS ON THE NOTE: "yooje" has as many letters as "usual," thusly defeating the purpose of the entire endeavor. Abbrevs. Crazy.

They have FOUR shows scheduled for NYC.

And yes, there are still tickets available.
I feel like it was my Canadian duty to bring this to your attention.

I've seen 'per ush', but I found it unsatisfying.

That's probably (probs?) in no way helpful; I'm useless, I know.

Wordver: fik-q-yal

Blogger's feisty today, droppin' the f-bomb and the southernisms at us. Is it because of too many comments, or too few? The world may never know.

hola riese!
just wanted to let you know that mondays without your recaps are unbearable. seriously!

@ Brooklyn Boy:
I have oft faced the same difficulty when commenting on this very blog. Ush looks weird, use seems to make more sense but is a word by itself, maybe it should be uje? That seems foreign. But then again, as impossible as it seems to pronounce, obvs- a trip of the tongue taking three steps down the palate- is perfectly usable.

All of the above auto-fun is fabulous. Particularly the typography material.

caitlinmae said...

Wow. that last comment makes me sound like a big a-hole.

I aim to please Lozo? Right. Just trying to diffuse the pressure and responsibility that rests on others.

w/r/t to the hands phenomenon — I set you up. Slam dunk!

So a proposition:

If you email me you snail mail, I can have Shaughnessy's sticky goodness (see what I'm doing here?) in you hands by weeks end. Sources. Actually, resources with advance review copies. Instant gratification is my forte — massive JK.

Oh, and next time just stop at (9) instead of chaeting. I guess that leaves me loving A;ex and, well, only semi-loving you.

Wait. I swear you and i were supposed to be on the most beautiful people list. So typical that Cheyenne would get it and not us. But I am happy Madeline Martin (Under the Bway Ingenues Section) made it. She was fantastic in August Osage.

Jackie is gorgeous. I want her to train me so effing bad. I am quite happy she isn't dating Mimi anymore...she kind of reminded me of a poodle and would like weirdly bit Jackie.

I haven't been able to get Evita out of my head...it's kind of starting to be an issue.

Apparently my "r" key is lagging. Add said letter to a couple of the aforementioned you-s.

That'd be you[r].

Oh, and "ch[ea]ting."

Dude, I need to slow down before I press publish.

Bracket bracket.

brooklyn boy: I like your NOTE ON THE NOTE. *pop*! And also -- syllables. It's all about the syllables.

A: Oh man, if only I did things in advance, which I don't. I mean, tell me the day before.

Adam: I find it unsatisfying too, and I think it's cause there's no "e" so it might be "ush" like short for "usher" but then when you add an "e," it seems to be like ... still "ush." You know?

laia: hola! just wanted to let you know that i'm workin' on something for autostraddle as we speak ... it won't be a recap, but maybe it'll slightly soothe.

caitlinmae: You are not a big a-hole. Nice shoulder! I think I'm going to take one of a;ex's shared items per day to satisfy people who like design and such things. typeography. etc.

juno: Well, it's always a pleasure to have my pressure and responsibility diffused ... w/r/t pleasing Lozo, I hope this snail mail business isn't actually intended to further his stalking efforts. Massive JK: he won't come over. He always says he's going to come, but he never does. Speaking of sticky goodness, you've got a deal. As long as you're back to loving semicolons, I'm happy.

eric mathew: See I think you're confusing "you and i" with "you" (as in -- me saying "you" -- eric mathew --), I think I could only be in the issue if they were doing a muppets special. I mean ... one of us did an Indigo girls dance mix and one of us didn't. I love that you don't live in the city and you see way more theater than I do.

Juno: dude, life goes fast.

Lozo:, You never know, you've probs not lost the ability to surprise yourself.brooklyn boy: I like your NOTE ON THE NOTE. *pop*! And also -- syllables. It's all about the syllables.
